For rural Alaskans in the Yukon Kuskokwim Delta region, the meaning of subsistence goes beyond survival. Without subsistence, the Indigenous would lose a critical element of their culture, traditions, community, and spiritual connection to the land and sea.
The word Yup'ik comes from the Yup'ik words 'yuk', meaning 'person', and 'pik', meaning 'real'. Together it translates into 'real' or 'genuine' person.
Our purpose is to build a brighter economic future for the Indigenous in Akiak, Alaska. We live our values through respect for others and our land, hard work and sharing. By the design of our creator, we were created Yup'ik in space and time; proud, for generations to come, of the values given to us by our Creator.
